Hi! My name is Denise and welcome to Spare Change Chic. I love flea markets, thrift shops and yard sales. I also love DIY, decorating, crafts, antiquing, re-purposing  items, baking, and scrapbooking. I am a follower of Jesus, wife to my sweetheart Christopher and Mom to a zany 15 year old girl named Danielle.
I grew up with a super creative Mom who can design anything and a flea market savvy Dad who can fix anything. So I love projects. Especially projects that don’t cost much. My favorite tools of the trade are: my trusty glue gun, needle and thread, spray paint, and my hammer.  Over the last 2 years I have been slowly re-decorating my home with my fabulous finds. But it’s a work in progress and I hope to share what I’m up to with you.

Clip On Earring Flower Ribbon Pins

by denise on April 18, 2012

Mother’s day is coming soon so I thought I would share a little project I did last year and gave as Mother’s Day gifts. I had some beautiful clip on earrings that belonged to my Great Aunt. She passed away in December 2010 and I really wanted to do something special with the earrings. I can’t wear them. They just pinch my ears too much.

So I decided to make flower ribbon pins and put the earrings in the middle of the flowers. I kept a few for myself and gave some to my Mom and my Sister as gifts. We loved our Aunt so much. It’s nice to have a new way to wear some of her pretty things. She loved her earrings and had kept some really beautiful costume jewelry from the 50′s and 60′s.

I’m sure you are familiar with flower pins. They are everywhere and it seems like every crafty blog has done a tutorial about making them from ribbon, fabric or felt. So I won’t try to bore you and will try to keep it simple. I had not seen anyone else put old earrings on them yet. Although I’m sure I’m not the only one who has thought of it. I’ve seen them a bunch of times with vintage buttons and I’ll bet small brooches would look great on them too.

I picked up some really gorgeous ribbon at the craft store. I got the kind with wires in it so I could crimp the wires. Some people pull the wire and shorten it. Whatever works for you is fine.

So here are my supplies:

Wired ribbon.

Felt squares.

Pin backs:

Vintage clip on earrings

www.sparechangechic.com1458

The only tools you should need are a pencil, scissors and a hot glue gun.

First I cut the felt into little squares (well almost squares). I got 16 squares per piece of felt. Then I rounded them in to circles (very imperfect circles).

www.sparechangechic.com1462

Then I crimped the ribbon wire like this. Just like the felt not being perfect squares or circles; these do not have to be perfectly spaced crimps. Don’t get an arthritic cramp in your hand trying to make it just right.

www.sparechangechic.com1461

Here is the only slightly difficult/takes a little coordination and speed part. Put a bunch of hot glue on one side of a felt circle. Then quickly before it dries put the ribbon on it going in a circle starting with the outside and working your way in. You have to go quick. And I will admit my first one was a craft fail. I made the circle too tight. It looked silly. You want the flower to look very open. PLEASE BE CAREFUL NOT TO BURN YOURSELF. This is were I used the pencil. I used the eraser side to push the ribbon down on the glue so I would not burn my fingertips. Sorry I don’t have a photo of this part because I was too busy trying to stick the ribbon on before the glue dried.

Then put some glue in the middle of the flower and attach your earring. When that dries flip it over and glue on your pin. Put it towards the top of your flower. If you put it right in the middle the flower will flop forward when you pin it to your blouse because it will be a little heavy.

www.sparechangechic.com1463

So here is the finished product.

www.sparechangechic.com1465

www.sparechangechic.com1466

www.sparechangechic.com1469

www.sparechangechic.com1468

Here are a few variations you can try. If you tend to wear tops that are made of delicate fabric that tears or snags easy use magnets instead of pins. You can get tiny magnets at the craft and hobby stores. Glue one to the felt backing and use a second magnet on the inside of your top.

Another variation is to use an alligator clip instead of a pin so you can attach the pin to your purse or a hat.

Here’s another tip. If you don’t have vintage clip on earrings shop the thrift stores and yard sales for them. You will find a bunch. Goodwill usually keeps them in the glass case by the counter.

I had fun picking out pretty ribbons to coordinate with my Aunt’s earrings. I’m so glad I can now wear these. Mom and Sis liked them too. Every time I see them I think of my Aunt. She was such a terrific lady and she was loved by everyone who knew her. I miss her terribly and love that I can now wear her earrings.

I just got My Memories Suite

April 16, 2012

I started using My Memories Suite a few weeks ago and I am hooked. I have been making traditional scrapbooks for 15 years. But after using this program I’m not planning to buy any more supplies. I will still do traditional scrapbooking but will make digital pages for pictures I take from now on.

So here are the first few pages I did. They are of my daughters 13th birthday. It was quite a day.

She got her very first makeover at the make-up counter in Macy’s.

www.sparechangechic.com 1-001

Then we went home to find her big surprise. While she was getting her makeover Dad, Nana, Grandpa and our friend Marcia had done a makeover on her bedroom. They made it a teen room and got rid of the pink and purple ponies.

www.sparechangechic.com 1-006

www.sparechangechic.com 1-007

Then of course we all had cake and she opened her presents. I think it was a pretty great birthday celebration, don’t you? She was surprised by all of it.

www.sparechangechic.com 1-005

This was a super fun day that took alot of planning and hard work, but she loved her special day. So it was all worth it.

I did these pages the first week I had the My Memories Suite software. I made 6 pages that week and I’m not kidding when I say it was easy. They even have a blog and Facebook page where you can get tons of tips and ideas. The thing I love about the FB page is that other scrapbookers share their pages and are willing to share advice for us newbies. Everyone was so helpful when I had a question.

Sometimes on the blog and FB page they will announce little contests and competitions. I won a credit for $25 worth of kits from one designer and WOW I was so thrilled. I can’t wait to start using some of those kits.

If you want to try My Memories Suite out I have a special code for you. You will get $10 off on the download of the software. After you are done you will also receive (in your email inbox) a coupon code for an additional $10 off on the purchase of their awesome kits. Not only does the software come with all sorts of pretty papers and embellishments, but you can get kits from several designers too. And many of the kits are FREE!!!!!!!

I love the kits I have downloaded so far.

Here are a couple of really cute kits they have in the store right now.

This one is called Candy Fairway and right now it’s FREE.

Candy Fairway Pack

This is Easter Blessings.

Easter Blessings pack

I do have to add that I am not getting paid to actually write this post. But if someone uses my coupon code STMMMS22247 I do receive a commission on the sale of their software. Right now any commission I receive goes directly towards our adoption fund so we can bring our son home. Thank you.

Spring Mantel 2012

April 15, 2012

OK this is a week late. I took the photos last weekend and have had a super busy week. But here is my Spring Mantel. True to my frugalness, (is that a word?) I only used items I already had from around the house.

Make sure you look at the whole post. There is a Springtime surprise at the end.

Hope you enjoy!

I had to include something that represents the real meaning of Easter which I would rather refer to as Resurrection Sunday. I printed this little vintage postcard on off white cardstock and put it in a pretty frame I picked up at a thrift store a couple of years ago. I got the postcard here. They have lots of neato printable vintage stuff. So check it out.

He has risen indeed!

www.sparechangechic.com321

I think this blue candle box thingy is from the Rachel Ashwell “Shabby Chic” line at Target. It was a garage sale find as well as the pink goblet. The eggs and bunny I found at Goodwill. The bunny and his brother above were terracotta. A little white pray paint does wonders.

www.sparechangechic.com322

Here is Mr. Bunny again extreme close up style. Gotta love bunny noses.

www.sparechangechic.com310

Of course I gotta show off one of my tea cup and saucer sets.

www.sparechangechic.com324

I love the dessert dish and birdie too.

www.sparechangechic.com319

The light up church is a permanent fixture on our mantel. A gift from my sweet MIL.

www.sparechangechic.com325

www.sparechangechic.com315

A combo of more Goodwill goodies.

www.sparechangechic.com305

Here is the whole mantel. I’m still learning how to use my new camera so it’s not the best shot. You are getting a look at my ugly 90′s ceiling fan in the living room. Another project for another day.

www.sparechangechic.com327

Here is the surprise! Looky what we found in a hanging basket on our porch.

www.sparechangechic.com335

I’m so glad I got a photo. These little guys (there are 5 hiding in the huddle) flew away about 3 days later. Bye bye birdies! Their Mama builds a nest in this hanging basket every year. Now that they have flown the coop I can put some flowers in there. But it was fun to have them around for a while.

Crafts For Orphans

March 6, 2012

I love it when young people “get it”. I don’t even know these girls but I’m proud of them. They get it. They see that there is a big world full of big needs beyond their front doors. Many adults don’t even get this. They understand there are children in this world without Mommies and Daddies who need a family. They understand that these children are languishing in orphanages and institutions in far away countries. They understand the most of the world has forgotten about them or doesn’t even realize they exist in the first place. many people don’t even want to acknowledge that they exist because to do so would mean they are now responsible to do something about it.

I have seen the orphan crisis up front and personal. I have been to far away places and seen the babies laying in the cribs with almost no human contact. I have seen their tummies bulging from malnutrition. I have seen the ones that have been there so long that they just stare at the wall with a blank stare on their faces because they know that no one is going to come and really hold them anymore. They have given up on life. Someone has to speak for them. Rachel and Faith are doing just that.

So I had a take a few minutes to share with my readers about what they are doing. This is a blog where I share crafts after all and I also happen to be a Mama by way of adoption and in the process of adopting again. So I think these girls are fabulous.

Rachel and Faith are twelve year old girls with a heart for orphans. They also are pretty talented and “crafty” girls. Here is their blog Crafts For Orphans.

They are selling items they have made themselves. Most, but not all of the items are made out of duct tape. COOL! My daughter went nuts over the duct tape purse. Obviously alot of love and hard work goes into their items. Please take a look and consider purchasing something.

Here are a few examples of their work.

The proceeds from sales of their items will go towards the adoption funds of these 3 precious children on the Reece’s Rainbow website: Harmony, Sasha and Wyatt.

We don’t have a photo of Harmony at this time but this is Sasha.

This is Wyatt.

All three of the children have very special needs and so desperately need families able to meet those needs. Adoption is expensive and money should never stand in the way of providing a child with a loving family. What Rachel and Faith are doing is wonderful and I really felt it was important to help them get the word out.

Please don’t hesitate to share and tweet this post. Most people just don’t know about the global orphan crisis unless someone tells them. Now you know. Please pass this along. Please pray for orphans everywhere. Please pray about what you can do to make a difference in their lives. Check out the Crafts for Orphans blog and make a purchase. Take a look at the Reece’s Rainbow website and consider what you might be able to do for one of these precious and vulnerable children. You may think you can’t make a difference, but you can. Rachel and Faith are two kids making a difference. I am committed to doing the same.

What’s For Dinner: Chicken Chile Enchiladas

February 20, 2012

My family loves this recipe so much that I thought I would share it with my readers. It’s easy and super yummy. It’s also a great way to use the leftover chicken after I’ve cooked a whole one in the crock-pot the previous day.

DSC00246

So here is our recipe for Chicken Chile Enchiladas.

You will need:
2-3 cups of Cooked Chicken (diced)
1 can of Enchilada Sauce (19 oz.)*
2 and 1/2 cups of Shredded Mexican Cheese
1 cup of Sour Cream (8 oz.)
1 can of Chopped Green Chiles (4.5 oz.)
1 package of large Tortillas (8 count)
Extra sour cream, green onions and or avocados for toppings if desired.

Heat your oven to 350 degrees. Spread 1/2 cup of the enchilada sauce on the bottom of a 9×13 glass baking pan (ungreased). Set aside.

In a medium mixing bowl, stir together diced chicken, 1 1/2 cup of shredded cheese, chiles and sour cream.

Spoon about 1/3 to 1/2 cup (depending on how much chicken you used) onto each tortilla in a line just off center of the tortilla. Roll them and place in baking pan, edge side down, nice and tightly, lined up in the pan.

Pour the remaining enchilada sauce on top of enchiladas and sprinkle on remaining shredded cheese.

Take a sheet of tin foil, spray one side with non-stick spray and place over pan sprayed side down.

Bake for 35 minutes, remove foil and bake another 10 to melt cheese.

Top with desired toppings listed above and serve with re-fried or black beans, corn and/or Spanish rice.

For Enchilada Sauce you can choose mild, medium or hot. We like mild.

DSC00251

Since we are a small family this gives us 2 dinners. I love this because that means we got 3 dinners out of the whole chicken I cooked in the crock pot. I also love this because it is easy enough that my daughter can help and even made it “almost” all by herself one night. Another cost saving thing about this recipe is that I stock up on the canned goods used here when they are on sale. The chiles, sauce and beans are always on my BOGO radar. A good time to stock up on these items is around the first week of May because they are always on sale for Cinco de Mayo.

Let me know if you try it out and what you think.

New Year = New Family Member

January 20, 2012

The Christmas holiday season was very different for us this year. After much prayer and consideration we decided to host an orphan from Ukraine. For a while now my sister and her husband have been involved in New Horizons for Children. It is a hosting program for orphans from Ukraine and Latvia. The children come to the USA for a month over Christmas (they have a summer program too) and get to experience Christmas in America and the love of a family. We had been doing a little volunteer work with NHFC too but didn’t intend on hosting anytime soon.

Well a situation arose where a family had to back out of hosting a boy a few weeks before the kids came. We prayed and decided to host Andriy. We knew it would not be a normal Christmas. Our daughter gladly gave up the idea of getting any “big” presents in exchange for having a little brother for a month (she hates being an only child). But we did not expect what happened next.

What happened on December 13 is that we met our son. That’s the simplest way to put it. We went to the airport, met up with the other anxious host families and waited for the kids to come down the escalator. As soon as we saw him our hearts melted and it became obvious that first week he was here that he belongs with us.

airport pick up crop

So this blog was on autopilot for December. I had a series of Christmas guest posts lined up long before I knew Andriy was coming (thank you God) so all I had to do was approve comments. But I have not been in the blogging groove after Christmas because we had a few more weeks with Andriy and we just wanted to be with him. Would you believe I made an entire scrapbook the last 2 days he was here (it was for him to take home) and I didn’t even post about that or take a photo of the finished product?

Andriy left on Jan. 11 (one of the hardest days of my life EVER!) and my husband and I have been in information gathering mode since. We officially decided to adopt him the day after he left. We picked an agency to do our home study and an adoption facilitator to do the rest. So now we are transitioning to fund raising mode. I have raised funds for things before, but never such a big amount ($26,000). So we are trusting God for every penny. This is a big leap of faith for us. But Andriy is absolutely worth all the effort it will take and all the money too. He is such a precious child. I wish all my blog readers could meet him. He has the sweetest smile and he is so full of life and laughter. We can’t wait to bring him home forever. Our house has been way too quiet since he left.

I know this is my crafty, thrift shopping and DIY, decorating blog but I have to put it out there at least once. We need a bunch of money to do this. So I am putting our ChipIn widget on the sidebar and on this post. If you feel led to give THANK YOU. If you feel led to pray for us THANK YOU. If you quit reading my blog because I just asked for money, that’s ok, I understand. Andriy is ultimately God’s child and in God’s timing we will have the privilege of being his earthly parents.

So here is the Chip in Button.

We also have a fundraiser with the Noonday Collection. You can read about the fundraiser and Noonday on our One Little Starfish adoption blog here.

So if once again over the next few months my posts are sporadic you will understand. My blog got off to such a great start last year then that dumb tornado threw me off in April. Then I made plans for a big comeback (with all sorts of project ideas I cannot remember now) and here comes the cutest boy ever into our lives. A boy who already calls us Mama and Papa. A boy who loves to be tickled and ride a bike. A boy who loves to play soccer and watch hockey with his Papa. A boy that gets along amazingly well with our daughter. A boy who has stolen our hearts. I will keep plugging away and posting when I can. Please forgive me if I’m not consistent. I’m not exactly a well organized person to begin with. I’m very ADD and usually have way to many irons in the fire. But I will do my best.

Thanks for hanging in there with my very inconsistent blog. I really do appreciate you. I’ll leave with a picture of the reason for this blog post. Our son so you can see why we fell in love.

Jesus — The Reason For the Season
By: Rachel Hauck

Through the narrow scope of 2000 years, Mary, the mother of Jesus, appears to be one lucky woman. Chosen by God to give birth to His son, the Savior of the world? All right, Mary, way to go.

“Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you,” Gabriel said.

How many of us would like a declaration like that? Highly favored. The Lord is with you. But Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

The angel told her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Mary’s seems confident and resolved when she responds, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”

She’d just been told the Holy Spirit will come upon her, that God’s power will overshadow her, that she’d become with child even though she wasn’t married, and she said, “I’m the Lord’s servant. Let your words be true.”

I find this amazing! A young woman. Ancient Bethlehem. Unwed mother. They stoned women for such things in her day. But Mary believed in God. And submitted to His will. He gave her the Holy Spirit – the same Holy Spirit given to us. If He gave her confidence, He will give us confidence. Even though, like Mary, our situation seems impossible.

Listen to Mary’s song later on in the first chapter of Luke.

“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me Holy is his name…”

Conceiving a child out of wedlock, by Divine intervention. Not a girl’s every day existence. Yet she had a Yes in her heart to God. She rejoiced. She boldly said, “Generations will remember me!”

How we struggle to trust God with our children. Our finances. Our emotional well-being. We worry. We fret. And wonder why we have no peace.

Christmas is the season where words like joy, peace and love are bantered around like Christmas candy. Let’s not take them as just words, but as truth. Let’s be like Mary and embrace God’s favor on our lives. Boldly declare “He’s done great things for me!”

Out of the grit of our own souls, we can reach His heart, and feel Him reaching for ours. No matter the pain of our past, present or future, God is there for us. He is able. Best of all, He is willing. “My soul glorifies the Lord this Christmas!”

The Panhandler’s Breath
By Robin Dance

He slipped in sideways between the closing elevator doors, as if he were late to a meeting; he pressed the “5″ without looking. Instead of suit and tie, though, baggy pants and faded navy hung on his tall, slim frame…and his stealth entry stiffened the hairs on the back of my neck.

I had noticed him a few seconds earlier, just after we had parted a sea of clamorous teens. He was smiling, grandfatherly, standing maybe 30 feet away where the electric shuttle picks up.

I had no idea he had been watching us, studying us, predator patiently awaiting his next prey.

The four of us were sealed in a four- by six-foot metal tomb. Tomb–that thought really scampered across my mind. I wondered if he had a knife in his pocket. I wanted to protect my son. Fight or flight pumped adrenaline but there was no where to run.

Extreme and ridiculous, these thoughts – and more – flashed through my mind. The Stranger began speaking.

“Yessir, I see you’re a family man with your wife and your son here…” and he nodded in my and my son’s direction.

“…you see I’m homeless and all I’ve got…” and on queue, he reached into his left pocket and pulled out two old pennies blackened with age. Two cents to his name?! It was all too contrived, too practiced, and I didn’t believe a word he was saying.

It was then I smelled it ~ the small space lent itself to that ~ and I doubted my doubt.

His breath.

It wasn’t the scent of alcohol. His eyes weren’t red, his voice didn’t waver; his wizened face matched his graying hair.

His breath was morning’s, zoo breath, the pet name I’d given to the scent inhaled when kissing my children awake when they were little.

He needed to brush his teeth. I wondered how long it had been since he brushed his teeth.

The elevator door opened and I handed him my leftover pizza as my son and I brushed past him. My husband handed him a bill and the Stranger thanked and God blessed him.

The elevator door closed behind us. Conflicted, I was relieved.

We got in the car and blurted first reaction–

“I didn’t believe a word he said.”

“That made me nervous.”

“I wonder if he’ll really eat the pizza.”

In the quiet, we were left to our own thoughts, contemplating the right thing to do. At the end of the day, this is what I decided: It doesn’t matter whether or not his story is true; for an old man to resort to begging, he has to be desperate. The money my husband gave him will never be missed. It was a reminder we’ve been entrusted with much and given much. Materially, yes, but more so spiritually. Loved, chosen, forgiven, redeemed, graced, lavished–every spiritual blessing. E v e r y.

There’s a part of me that wishes I would have been brave enough to ask the man his story, made sure he knew he was loved…and bought him a tooth brush.

Later, it occurred to me he could have been an angel. Doesn’t that mean generosity, kindness and hospitality is always the right response? Then it’s not about you or the stranger or the circumstance, it’s about a simple, God-glorifying response.

Had we entertained an angel unaware? We’ll never know.

But it wouldn’t be the first time the Breath of Heaven smelled like a zoo.
